Trusting News, alongside Kent State’s Center for Scholastic Journalism, NSPA and Quill & Scroll, are hosting a summer webinar series aimed at helping journalism educators teach their students about creator-model journalism.

As more news consumers turn to independent journalists and creators for information, it is becoming increasingly important to not only prepare journalism students to understand the rapidly shifting media landscape but also to equip them to produce and model the effective strategies used by creator journalists.

The series is designed for high school journalism educators but is open and relevant to all journalism educators, and offers continuing education and graduate credit options. (Note: The option to earn graduate credit includes a $165 tuition fee.)

Below we’ll share a look at the series. You can register for the free webinar series here and learn more about continuing education credits here

Trusting News’ work with creator journalists

Our goal at Trusting News is to ensure the public has access to ethical, accurate and helpful information. That’s why, over the past few years, we’ve been investing in helping independent creator journalists clearly communicate their credibility and what sets them apart from other information online.

Recently, we’ve:

  • Created a toolkit in partnership with Lenfest and Project C to provide guidance to newsrooms and funders about how to identify credible independent journalists to support and partner with.
  • Developed a creator ethics checklist to help guide creators through ways they can get clear about the ethics behind their work.
  • As part of a great guide from the American Press Institute, we created an ethics checklist to help newsrooms determine who which influencers and trusted messengers are a good fit to partner with.
  • Coming soon: We’ll be convening a cohort of creators for a paid research opportunity to experiment with what signals of credibility the public responds well to. If you want to be alerted when that application goes live, email mollie@TrustingNews.org.

At Trusting News, we learn how people decide what news to trust and turn that knowledge into actionable strategies for journalists. We train and empower journalists to take responsibility for demonstrating credibility and actively earning trust through transparency and engagement.
