Trusting News receives continued funding from New Pluralists
The Trusting News team is thrilled to announce we’ve received continued financial support from New Pluralists, a funder and field collaborative working to foster a culture of pluralism in America.
The $150,000 grant will support our 2024 work overall, including:
- strengthening election coverage
- responding to news avoidance
- addressing newsroom echo chambers
- building trust through AI and technology
- leaning into engagement and listening

Previous New Pluralists support in 2022 funded the development of our Dimensions of Difference work, in partnership with Spaceship Media. That work asks the question: Who might feel seen and understood by your journalism, and who might feel neglected or misrepresented? It then guides newsrooms to an understanding of how the staff’s own values and assumptions shape their work and how newsroom routines and conversations can evolve to account for the gaps in their experiences.
The 2022 grant also funded our Road to Pluralism initiative, which involved partner newsrooms in research and collaborations around polarization and engagement.
Our team is invested in an examination of how journalism contributes to polarization. We are continually exploring how journalistic practices could evolve to foster empathy and curiosity and equip the public to participate in the shared decision-making that democracy requires. We are happy to partner with New Pluralists, an organization that includes this statement on its About page:
“Today, the promise of pluralism remains, yet we the people are more divided than ever. Many forces exploit our differences, stoke anxiety, and fuel our worst impulses. Americans too often distrust, disrespect, and dehumanize each other — undermining our ability to tackle challenges large and small, and enabling hate, extremism, and violence to take root. To realize the vision of a politically vibrant, multi-racial, multi-faith democracy, we must renew the promise of America by ushering in a new pluralism.”
